Broken tool detection system for CNC machines

Detect tools quickly and reliably with our broken tool detection system for CNC machines. Explore our high-speed, laser tool breakage detection solution, keeping cycle time low in high-volume production environments.

Fast, accurate and reliable broken tool detection

The ability to quickly detect whether a tool is broken is an important factor in reducing scrap parts, re-work and machine downtime. TRS2 is a cost-effective, fast, and reliable laser broken tool detection system for CNC machines.

TRS2 uses ToolWise™ technology to analyse laser reflections and inspect tools for damage. As a non-contact system, inspection carries no risk of damage to the tool. TRS2 can check whether small tools, under a millimetre, are broken or intact, and ready to machine.

ToolWise™ technology means that the transmitter and receiver is packaged into a single compact unit. This makes it easy to install on vertical, horizontal and multi-tasking machines.

TRS2's flexible mounting options allow it to be positioned on any rigid surface within the machine and angled in any direction. This enables the laser to inspect tools during their transition from tool change to the table, eliminating unnecessary machine movement and reducing cycle time.

After a detailed analysis on the TRS2 tool recognition system, based on the cost to run machines, we know this equates to a saving of more than €150K in the first year. This is because most of the non-productive machine time taken to check tools has now been released to machine components. We have paid back the initial investment in the TRS2s in a matter of just 5 months.

Detect tool breakage in real-time with TRS2

To achieve automated machining cycles, broken tool detection and tool setting solutions need to be both fast and reliable.

If a tool breaks during a machining cycle, it can lead to costly downtime, damage to the workpiece, and even potential harm to the machine itself.

Thanks to TRS2, manufacturers can quickly identify the condition of a tool. If a broken tool is detected, TRS2 can raise an alarm or swap to an alternative tool. This prevents damage to the machine itself and reduces time spent on essential, but non-productive tool checking.

This is especially important for manufacturers in industries such as automotive, or semiconductor, where keeping cycle time low is key.
